AV8 Ace – 95th Fighter Squadron Vintage Aviation Tee

The 95th Fighter Squadron was activated in early 1942 at Harding Field, Louisiana, as part of the 82d Pursuit Group. After moving to California, the squadron equipped with the twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightning and trained under Fourth Air Force before deploying overseas. Arriving first in Northern Ireland for additional preparation, the unit soon moved into North Africa following Operation Torch, entering combat under Twelfth Air Force and beginning its role in the Allied air campaign.

During the North African campaign, the 95th flew antisubmarine patrols, escorted bombers, and struck enemy shipping and airfields as it advanced east through Algeria and Tunisia. The squadron distinguished itself with a daring low-level attack on enemy airfields at Foggia, Italy—earning its first Distinguished Unit Citation. It later supported the invasion of Sicily and conducted critical escort missions, including a flawless operation protecting B-25 bombers over Naples, earning a second Distinguished Unit Citation for its effectiveness and precision in combat.

As the war progressed, the squadron moved into Italy under Fifteenth Air Force, providing long-range escort for heavy bombers and striking key strategic targets across Europe. It earned a third Distinguished Unit Citation during a major attack on oil refineries in Ploiești, Romania—one of the most heavily defended targets of the war. By the end of World War II, the 95th Fighter Squadron had destroyed over 400 enemy aircraft, including nearly 200 in aerial combat, producing seven aces and cementing its reputation as one of the most formidable fighter units in the European Theater.
