The 330th Bomb Squadron was activated in March 1942 at Barksdale Field, Louisiana, as part of the legendary 93rd Bombardment Group. Training with the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, the squadron prepared for deployment to Europe while also flying antisubmarine patrols over the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. In a historic milestone, the 330th became part of the first B-24 heavy bomber group assigned to VIII Bomber Command in England, crossing the Atlantic in formation before entering combat operations in late 1942.

Operating from bases in England and later North Africa, the squadron carried out strategic bombing missions against submarine pens, ports, shipping, and enemy supply lines. Despite difficult conditions in Algeria and Libya—including mud-soaked airfields and damaging desert dust storms—the 330th delivered devastating attacks against Axis logistics supporting the North African campaign, earning its first Distinguished Unit Citation. In 1943, the squadron took part in the famous Operation Tidal Wave, the daring low-level strike against the oil refineries at Ploiești, Romania, one of the most dangerous bombing missions of the war.

Returning to England, the 330th resumed strategic bombing operations across occupied Europe, striking rail yards, aircraft factories, oil facilities, and military infrastructure deep inside Germany. The squadron also supported major Allied operations including the Normandy invasion, the breakout at Saint-Lô, Operation Market Garden, and the airborne assault across the Rhine. By the end of the war, the 330th Bomb Squadron had built a distinguished combat record defined by long-range precision bombing, resilience under extreme conditions, and critical contributions to Allied victory in Europe.
