The 421st Bombardment Squadron was activated in March 1944 as a Boeing B-29 Superfortress very heavy bombardment unit during the final phase of World War II. After initial training in the United States using both B-17 Flying Fortresses and the newer B-29, the squadron deployed to North Field on Tinian in the Mariana Islands in early 1945. Assigned to XXI Bomber Command under the Twentieth Air Force, the 421st became part of the massive strategic air offensive directed against the Japanese home islands, aimed at crippling Japan’s industrial and military capability.

The squadron began combat operations in February 1945, first flying “shakedown” missions against Japanese-held islands before joining the devastating bombing campaign over Japan itself. Participating in the large-scale incendiary raids against Tokyo and other major cities, the 421st helped carry out some of the most destructive air operations of the war. In addition to firebombing urban centers, the squadron attacked aircraft factories, oil refineries, chemical plants, and transportation networks critical to the Japanese war effort. The unit earned two Distinguished Unit Citations for its highly effective attacks against the industrial center of Yokohama and for mining operations in the strategically vital Shimonoseki Strait.

As the war neared its conclusion, the 421st continued bombing missions until just before Japan’s surrender in August 1945. Following the end of hostilities, the squadron shifted from combat to humanitarian operations, using its B-29s to deliver relief supplies to Allied prisoners of war held across Japan and Manchuria. Remaining in the Pacific after the war, the squadron eventually relocated to the Philippines before being inactivated in June 1946. The combat record of the 421st Bombardment Squadron reflected the growing importance of long-range strategic bombing in modern warfare and the decisive role of air power in the Pacific Theater.
