The 509th Composite Group was one of the most historically significant units of the United States Army Air Forces, created during World War II for a mission unlike any other—delivering the world’s first atomic weapons. Activated on December 17, 1944, at Wendover Army Air Field, Utah, the unit was commanded by Paul W. Tibbets. Designated as a “composite” group due to its mix of aircraft, it operated specially modified Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers, along with transport aircraft supporting its highly classified operations.

Deploying to North Field on Tinian in the Mariana Islands in 1945, the 509th conducted extensive training and combat preparation, including practice missions and conventional bombing runs using high-explosive “pumpkin bombs.” In August 1945, the group carried out its historic mission—delivering atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki—events that would bring World War II to a close and forever change the nature of warfare.

Following the war, the 509th remained at the forefront of strategic air power, becoming one of the original units assigned to Strategic Air Command. Redesignated as the 509th Bombardment Group, it retained its specialized B-29 aircraft and continued to serve as the nation’s primary atomic delivery force. The legacy of the 509th Composite Group stands as a defining moment in military history, marking the dawn of the nuclear age and the evolution of modern strategic deterrence.
