The 91st Bombardment Group (Heavy) was one of the most recognized and battle-tested units of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Flying the iconic Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the group operated from RAF Bassingbourn in England as part of the Eighth Air Force strategic bombing campaign over Europe. Known unofficially as “The Ragged Irregulars,” the 91st consisted of the 322nd, 323rd, 324th, and 401st Bomb Squadrons, earning a reputation for determination and resilience while suffering some of the heaviest losses of any bomb group in the war.
Among its most famous aircraft was the legendary Memphis Belle, assigned to the 324th Bomb Squadron. The Memphis Belle became one of the first B-17 bombers to complete 25 combat missions over Europe and safely return to the United States, symbolizing the courage and endurance of American bomber crews. The aircraft and its crew gained national fame through wartime media coverage and later became enduring icons of the air war over Europe, representing the sacrifice and grit of the Eighth Air Force bomber campaign.
Over the course of the war, the 91st Bomb Group flew more than 340 combat missions against heavily defended targets across occupied Europe and Germany, striking factories, rail yards, airfields, and industrial centers critical to the Nazi war effort. Though officially inactivated after World War II, the legacy of the 91st continued through later reconnaissance and strategic operations during the Cold War era. Today, the history of the 91st Bomb Group—and the enduring image of the Memphis Belle—remains one of the most celebrated chapters in American military aviation history.
