The 94th Aero Squadron was formed at Kelly Field, Texas on August 20, 1917, during the earliest days of American military aviation. Made up almost entirely of volunteers from across the United States—most with no prior military experience—the unit was quickly molded into a fighting force through intensive drill and basic training. By late September, the squadron was ordered to Mineola Field, New York, where its 160 enlisted men and two officers continued preparing for deployment overseas.

As part of the U.S. Army Air Service, the 94th deployed to the Western Front as a Day Pursuit (fighter) squadron within the 1st Pursuit Group. Their mission was to dominate the skies—engaging enemy aircraft, escorting reconnaissance and bombing missions, attacking observation balloons, and supporting ground forces along the front lines. Among the first American pursuit squadrons to see combat, the 94th quickly earned a reputation for aggressive aerial combat and effectiveness in battle.

The squadron became one of the most famous units of World War I, widely followed in American newspapers. Its iconic “Hat in the Ring” insignia came to symbolize America’s entry into the air war. Legendary pilots such as Eddie Rickenbacker, Douglas Campbell, and Raoul Lufbery helped cement its legacy. After the war, the squadron returned home in 1919, with its lineage continuing today in the 94th Fighter Squadron—a lasting link to one of America’s original fighter squadrons.
