The United States Army Air Forces (AAF) was established on June 20, 1941, as the primary air combat arm of the U.S. Army during World War II and the direct predecessor to today’s United States Air Force. Created to give military aviation greater autonomy, the AAF unified previously scattered aviation units under a single command structure, allowing for rapid expansion and more effective control of air operations. Although still part of the Army, it functioned alongside the Army Ground Forces and Army Service Forces as one of three major components of U.S. military power during the war.

As America mobilized for global conflict, the AAF grew into a massive force, reaching over 2.4 million personnel and operating nearly 80,000 aircraft at its peak. With hundreds of bases across the United States and more than 1,600 airfields worldwide, it became a dominant force in every theater of war. From strategic bombing campaigns to fighter escort missions and close air support, the AAF played a decisive role in achieving Allied air superiority and ultimately securing victory.

By the end of World War II, the Army Air Forces had evolved into a virtually independent service in both scale and function, directing air operations across the globe. This transformation paved the way for a full military reorganization, culminating in the National Security Act of 1947, which officially established the United States Air Force as a separate branch in September 1947. The legacy of the AAF endures as the foundation of modern American air power and the doctrine of air dominance.
