The 3rd Pursuit Squadron “Hell’s Angels” was one of the three original fighter squadrons of the legendary Flying Tigers, the American Volunteer Group formed to defend China against Japanese aggression before the United States officially entered World War II. Commanded under the leadership of Claire Chennault, the “Hell’s Angels” operated from bases in Burma and China flying the shark-faced Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. The squadron quickly earned a reputation as one of the AVG’s most aggressive and successful combat units, specializing in bomber interception, convoy protection, and defensive operations along the vital Burma Road supply route.

Following the outbreak of war in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor, the “Hell’s Angels” entered combat almost immediately, defending Rangoon, Kunming, and other strategic locations from repeated Japanese air attacks. Using Chennault’s innovative hit-and-run “dive-and-zoom” tactics, the squadron exploited the ruggedness and firepower of the P-40 against faster-turning Japanese fighters. The 3rd Pursuit Squadron became especially famous during the defense of Rangoon in late 1941 and early 1942, where its pilots repeatedly intercepted Japanese bomber formations and inflicted heavy losses despite being heavily outnumbered. Their shark-mouth aircraft and daring combat style became iconic symbols of Allied resistance in Asia.

As the Burma Campaign intensified, the “Hell’s Angels” continued fighting during the Allied withdrawal into China, carrying out escort missions, strafing attacks, and defensive patrols under extremely difficult conditions. The squadron achieved one of the highest victory totals within the Flying Tigers and helped establish the AVG’s legendary combat reputation. When the American Volunteer Group was officially dissolved in July 1942 and absorbed into the 23rd Fighter Group, the combat experience and tactics developed by the “Hell’s Angels” carried forward into the U.S. Army Air Forces’ China air operations. Today, the 3rd Pursuit Squadron remains one of the most celebrated fighter units associated with the Flying Tigers legacy.
