The 179th Fighter Squadron traces its World War II lineage to the 393d Fighter Squadron, activated in July 1943 at Hamilton Field, California, as part of the 367th Fighter Group. Formed during a critical period of U.S. air expansion, the squadron trained extensively across California and Nevada, initially flying the Bell P-39 Airacobra. After completing stateside training, the unit deployed overseas in early 1944, arriving in England where it transitioned to the twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightning, requiring rapid retraining before entering combat.

The squadron flew its first combat mission in May 1944, conducting fighter sweeps, bomber escort, and dive-bombing missions over occupied Europe. During the D-Day invasion, it provided critical air cover for Allied forces, helping protect the massive fleet crossing the English Channel. As the war progressed, the unit played a key role in ground support operations across France, striking railways, convoys, airfields, and armored units. In intense combat operations—including heavily defended attacks near Cherbourg and major engagements over enemy airfields—the squadron earned distinction for its aggressive tactics and resilience under fire.

Advancing with Allied forces across Europe, the squadron continued close air support and interdiction missions through France and into Germany. In 1945, it transitioned to the powerful Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, further enhancing its ground attack capabilities. The unit earned multiple commendations, including Distinguished Unit Citations, for precision strikes against heavily defended targets and direct support of advancing Allied armies. By the war’s end, the squadron had established a legacy of adaptability, firepower, and relentless air support—laying the foundation for what would become the modern 179th Fighter Squadron.
