Flying Tigers became legendary for their defense of China and the Burma Road during the darkest early days of World War II. Commanded by Claire Chennault, the American Volunteer Group operated from bases in Burma and China flying the shark-faced Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Organized into the “Adam & Eves,” “Panda Bears,” and “Hell’s Angels” squadrons, the Flying Tigers were tasked with protecting the vital Burma supply route into China after much of eastern China had fallen under Japanese occupation. Their first combat missions in December 1941 quickly demonstrated their effectiveness, as they intercepted and destroyed Japanese bombers attacking Kunming and Rangoon.
Throughout the BTheurma Campaign, the Flying Tigers fought against overwhelming odds while defending Allied positions and supply lines from repeated Japanese air attacks. Using Chennault’s innovative “dive-and-zoom” tactics, the AVG exploited the speed and durability of the P-40 against more maneuverable Japanese fighters. During fierce air battles over Rangoon, Mingaladon, and the Burma Road, the Flying Tigers repeatedly inflicted heavy losses on Japanese bomber and fighter formations while protecting retreating Allied forces. As Japanese offensives intensified in early 1942, the AVG was forced into a fighting withdrawal through Burma and back into China, continuing combat operations from remote forward airfields under increasingly difficult conditions.
Even during retreat, the Flying Tigers remained highly effective, helping halt Japanese advances near the Salween River and defending strategic Chinese cities from air attack. Their aggressive combat record and remarkable success provided a major morale boost to both China and the United States at a time when Allied victories were rare in the Pacific. By the time the AVG was officially disbanded on July 4, 1942, and absorbed into the 23rd Fighter Group, the Flying Tigers had become one of the most iconic aviation units of World War II, symbolizing determination, innovation, and the early resistance against Japanese expansion in Asia.
