The Flying Tigers, officially known as the American Volunteer Group (AVG), was formed in 1941 to help defend China against Japanese invasion before the United States formally entered World War II. Commanded by aviation strategist Claire Chennault, the group consisted of volunteer pilots and ground crews recruited from the U.S. Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps. Training in Burma and operating under the Republic of China Air Force, the Flying Tigers quickly became one of the most famous air units of the war, flying the rugged Curtiss P-40 Warhawk painted with their iconic shark-mouth nose art.
The Flying Tigers entered combat shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and immediately gained a reputation for aggressive tactics and remarkable success against Japanese aircraft. Using Chennault’s innovative “dive-and-zoom” combat doctrine, the AVG exploited the strengths of the P-40 while avoiding traditional dogfights with more maneuverable enemy fighters. Despite being heavily outnumbered and operating under difficult conditions in China and Burma, the Flying Tigers achieved extraordinary combat results, officially destroying nearly 300 enemy aircraft while suffering minimal losses of their own.
Beyond their battlefield achievements, the Flying Tigers became a powerful symbol of resistance during some of the darkest days of the war. Their victories provided hope to both China and the United States at a time when Allied forces were struggling across the Pacific. In July 1942, the AVG was officially disbanded and absorbed into the 23rd Fighter Group under the U.S. Army Air Forces, but the legend of the Flying Tigers—and their shark-faced P-40s—endures as one of the most iconic stories in aviation history.
