The VF-191 "Satan's Kittens" traces its lineage to VF-19, which was established on 15 August 1943 during the rapid expansion of U.S. Naval Aviation in World War II. Flying the formidable Grumman F6F Hellcat, the squadron trained for carrier operations and joined the U.S. Navy's fast carrier forces as they advanced across the Pacific. Designed specifically to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Hellcat became the Navy's premier air superiority fighter, and VF-19 contributed to the growing Allied dominance of the skies during the final years of the war.
Operating from USS Lexington (CV-16), the squadron participated in major carrier offensives against Japanese forces throughout the Pacific. VF-19 flew fighter sweeps, bomber escort missions, fleet air defense, and ground attack operations during campaigns over the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa, and the Japanese home islands. The squadron's pilots protected American carrier task forces from enemy aircraft while striking airfields, shipping, and military installations that weakened Japan's ability to continue the war. Like many carrier fighter squadrons of the era, VF-19 operated under demanding combat conditions, launching multiple sorties each day from the deck of a moving aircraft carrier.
Following World War II, the squadron transitioned into the jet age, flying aircraft including the Grumman F9F Panther, Vought F-8 Crusader, McDonnell F-4 Phantom II, and ultimately the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. Redesignated VF-191in 1948 and adopting the nickname "Satan's Kittens," the squadron continued serving with distinction through the Cold War before being disestablished in 1978. Its World War II service helped establish a proud legacy of carrier-based fighter operations that continued for more than three decades.
