The 430th Fighter Squadron was activated on August 1, 1943, in Southern California as part of the 474th Fighter Group under IV Fighter Command. Training over the Mojave Desert, the squadron flew the twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightning, preparing for deployment to the European Theater. Arriving in England in March 1944 under Ninth Air Force, the unit began operations from bases in Britain and later advanced across France, Belgium, and Germany, carrying the tail code “K6” and the call sign “Back Door.”
Entering combat in April 1944, the squadron focused primarily on attack and interdiction missions, striking bridges, railroads, and enemy supply lines in preparation for the Normandy invasion. During D-Day and the breakout at Saint-Lô, the 430th provided air cover and conducted relentless armed reconnaissance missions against German troop movements and transport networks. Operating from forward airfields such as those in Normandy, the squadron played a key role in disrupting enemy reinforcements, including major strikes along the Seine during the Falaise-Argentan campaign.
Throughout late 1944 and into 1945, the 430th supported major Allied operations including the push into the Netherlands, the Battle of the Bulge, and the airborne assault across the Rhine. As part of the 474th Fighter Group, it earned a Distinguished Unit Citation and recognition from the Belgian Army for its combat effectiveness. Flying deep into Germany in the final months of the war, the squadron helped cripple enemy infrastructure and resistance. Following victory in Europe, the unit returned to the United States and was inactivated in December 1945, leaving behind a legacy of precision strike capability and relentless battlefield support.
