AV8 Ace – VMF 321 Vintage Marine Aviation Tee

The VMF-321, known as the “Hell’s Angels,” was activated on February 1, 1943, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, during the rapid expansion of Marine aviation in World War II. The squadron became known for its distinctive insignia featuring a winged female figure often referred to as the “Naked Angel,” while a rarer alternate emblem—a Disney-designed “Bobcat” patch—was also associated with the unit. These insignias became enduring symbols of one of the Marine Corps’ aggressive fighter squadrons in the Pacific Theater.

Equipped with the legendary Vought F4U Corsair, VMF-321 deployed to the Solomon Islands, operating primarily from Barakoma Airfield on Vella Lavella. Flying combat patrols, escort missions, and fighter sweeps over contested island chains, the squadron played an important role in securing Allied air superiority in the South Pacific. The Corsair’s speed, firepower, and rugged performance made it one of the most feared Allied fighters of the war, and VMF-321 pilots used these advantages effectively against Japanese aircraft and ground targets.

During its wartime service, VMF-321 was credited with 39 aerial victories while supporting the broader Allied island-hopping campaign against Japanese forces. Like many Marine fighter squadrons operating from primitive island airfields, the unit endured harsh tropical conditions, difficult maintenance challenges, and constant operational pressure. Today, the “Hell’s Angels” insignia and surviving WWII-era patches remain highly sought after by collectors and aviation historians, preserving the legacy of a Marine squadron that helped carry the fight across the Pacific skies.
