The 25th Aero Squadron was organized in 1917 at Kelly Field, Texas, during the rapid expansion of the United States Army Air Service in World War I. Originally formed from recruits assigned to help build and develop the new airfield, the squadron performed construction, aircraft maintenance, and aviation support duties while receiving military training. After deploying overseas in early 1918, the unit was attached to the British Royal Flying Corps in England, where its personnel gained advanced experience maintaining and supporting frontline fighter aircraft such as the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5, Sopwith Camel, and SPAD fighters.

Following extensive training in England, the 25th Aero Squadron moved to France and was eventually assigned to the 4th Pursuit Group of the Second Army Air Service. The squadron became one of the first American units equipped with the British-built S.E.5a fighter, a highly respected aircraft known for its speed and stability in combat. Operating from Croix de Metz Aerodrome near Toul, the 25th prepared for combat missions over the Western Front during the final weeks of the war. Although delayed aircraft deliveries and the timing of the Armistice limited its combat action, the squadron successfully flew armed patrols over enemy territory during November 1918, officially qualifying as an operational pursuit squadron.

While the 25th Aero Squadron saw only limited combat before the end of the war, its significance lay in helping establish America’s growing fighter aviation capability during World War I. The squadron’s close cooperation with British air forces provided valuable experience in fighter operations, aircraft maintenance, and aerial tactics that influenced the development of future American pursuit aviation. Its lineage would eventually continue into the modern era through the 25th Space Range Squadron, making it one of the oldest continuously linked aviation organizations in American military history.
