The 21st Bomb Squadron was one of the original squadrons of the 30th Bombardment Group, serving with distinction in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Activated before the war, the squadron initially flew patrol and antisubmarine missions before transitioning into long-range combat operations across the Pacific. Operating the rugged Consolidated B-24 Liberator, the 21st became known for its aggressive bombing missions against Japanese airfields, shipping, supply routes, and fortified island positions as Allied forces advanced across the Pacific.

The squadron earned recognition for its relentless low-level attacks and strategic bombing operations throughout New Guinea, the Philippines, and later Okinawa. Flying from primitive forward airfields under harsh tropical conditions, crews often faced intense anti-aircraft fire, dangerous weather, and long overwater missions deep into enemy territory. The 21st Bomb Squadron played a critical role in weakening Japanese defenses prior to amphibious invasions, supporting Allied ground operations and disrupting enemy logistics throughout the island-hopping campaign.

Among the squadron’s most recognizable symbols was the famous “Wee Willie” bee insignia, a distinctive emblem that reflected the aggressive spirit and determination of its crews. Like many Pacific bomber units, the squadron developed a reputation for toughness, adaptability, and endurance while operating far from established supply lines. By the end of the war, the 21st Bomb Squadron had helped establish Allied air superiority in the Pacific and left behind a proud combat legacy as part of the broader success of the 30th Bomb Group.
