The 103rd Aero Squadron was one of the most celebrated American pursuit squadrons of World War I and the first U.S. fighter squadron to see combat on the Western Front. Organized in 1917 at Kelly Field, Texas, the squadron deployed to France where it became closely associated with the legendary Lafayette Escadrille, inheriting its famous “Indian Head” insignia and many of its experienced American volunteer pilots. Flying the agile SPAD XIII and earlier SPAD VII, the 103rd quickly earned a reputation for aggressive aerial combat and tactical excellence.
Under the leadership of experienced aviators such as William Thaw II and Robert Rockwell, the squadron fought continuously across France in support of both French and American armies. Pilots of the 103rd flew hundreds of combat patrols, escort missions, and aerial engagements during major campaigns including the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The squadron produced several American aces, including Paul F. Baer, who became the first ace of an American unit during the war. Despite frequent enemy attacks and difficult conditions, the 103rd established itself as the backbone of early American pursuit aviation.
By the end of World War I, the 103rd Aero Squadron had flown more than 470 combat missions and was credited with destroying over 50 enemy aircraft and balloons. Awarded the French Croix de Guerre and the French Fourragère, the squadron earned recognition for bravery, persistence, and combat effectiveness. Its legacy continued after the war when its lineage was carried forward into the modern 94th Fighter Squadron, preserving the heritage of one of America’s pioneering fighter squadrons.
